Freedom of Information
I have particular knowledge and experience in Freedom of Information matters. I have knowledge and experience of the following key pieces of legislation:
I keep up to date with developments in this area of law through reading relevant decisions of the UK Information Commissioner, the Scottish Information Commissioner, the First Tier Tribunal (Information Rights), the Upper Tribunal and the Courts. I also keep up to date in this field through reading the latest guidance available from the statutory regulators: The Information Commissioner and the Scottish Information Commissioner.
I contributed written evidence to the Justice Committee of the House of Commons in their Post-legislative scrutiny of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and have also provided written evidence to the Scottish Parliament in respect of the Freedom of Information (Amendment) (Scotland) Act 2013. My written submissions to the Justice Committee of the House of Commons can be found here and my written evidence to the Scottish Parliament's Finance Committee can be found here
I am a volunteer administrator on the 'WhatDoTheyKnow?' website providing advice and assistance to users of the site on making information requests and on their rights under the legislation. My role also involves engaging with public authority staff in respect of requests made by site users to them.
I have also taken an appeal to the First Tier Tribunal (Information Rights) as a 'Litigant in Person' under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, which settled on the day by way of a Consent Order. The case involved internal audits of the performance of the Cabinet Office in respect of handling Freedom of Information requests.
FOI is also one of the topics which I frequently blog about on my Prout de Jure blog. You can read my Freedom of Information blog posts here
I also have a keen interest in Data Protection law in the United Kingdom, particularly in respect of the rights of data subjects. I keep up to date with developments in this area of law through reading Enforcement Notices and Monetary Penalty Notices issued by the Information Commissioner. I also read relevant decisions of the specialist Tribunals and the Courts. Finally, I keep my knowledge up to date by reading the relevant guidance issued by the Information Commissioner.
Data Protection is also one of the topics which I blog about on my Prout de Jure blog. You can read my blog posts on Data Protection here
I have an interest in privacy matters, especially where they interact with FOI and Data Protection. I have an interest in the workings of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations as well as the Regulation of Investigatory Powers legislation.
